"I only saw Janis Joplin one time - on a hot summer day in San Jose, California, at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds. We (Lindsey and I) were opening a big outdoor show for her, and because of that, I got to stay onstage and watch the other bands. I don't exactly know what I expected, bit I did not expect what I witnessed.
She was extraordinary. She had a connection with the audience that I had not seen before, and when she left the stage - I knew that a little bit of my destiny had changed - I would search to find that connection that I had seen between Janis and her audience. In a blink of an eye - she changed my life."
Stevie Nicks
"I remember thinking that Janis Joplin sang like Mae West talked. When I first heard the primal scream in "Piece of My Heart," i was hooked. Cheap Thrills, Janis "live" with Big Brother And The Holding Company, was one of my all time faves. During the "whoa, whoa, whoa, whoas" in "Combination Of The Two," I couldn't help but go to the mirror and pretend I was a wild woman like Janis, in a rock band. She was outrageous... She still rocks a piece of my heart."
Joan Jett
"The thing that really got me about Janis the most was how liberated she was. She stood in that power even though it was kind of that platform of blues of being completely tormented, that enabled her to just stand there and let it go at a time when women were not doing that."

"There you were living your nice little life in the suburbs and suddenly therre was this train wreck, and it was Janis. Theweren't any other singers around like her at the time and I, like the rest of her audience, took it very personally."
Chrissie Hynde
I first saw Janis Joplin at the Monterey Pop Festival in the summer of 1967. She was then an unknown, being given an opportunity to perform on the same stage with the reigning greats of the popular music world... Seeing her for the first time was an experience I'll never forget. She tore at your insides and tingled every nerve. Her raw power and electriity was awesome...
Janis sang in the eye of the hurricane. She didn't simply "sing" a song - she ravaged it, tore it to shreds, exploded it. And yet, at the right moment, she could be incredibly gentle, caressing each word with tenderness and understanding... We are awed that one human being - yes, greatly gifted and talented but still one person - could give so much.
